Rear torque arm bushing problem 700

I am replacing all the rear suspension bushings in my '88 740. All went fine except for the front torque arm bushings. The bushing I got as a replacement (which looks like all the pics of said bushing on the web and has the right part number) does not really look anything like the old one that I pressed out. Image attached of two bushings. Old one on the left, new on the right. The new bushing looks like it is intended for a smaller width arm, and is a larger diameter. I tried pressing them in with no luck. The first one broke. The second one I finally managed to get in but it was so tight it broke internally and squirted out the sides.

Has anyone encountered this problem? The two bushings pictured have the same part number, but are clearly quite different. Did Volvo change the design at some point? Maybe I need to use a special technique or tool?

Any advice would be appreciated. So far I am a bit baffled.

James
