Tranny Replacement Question

A few tranny questions for you gurus out there:

1. How do the AW70L/72L differ from the AW70 in reliability and performance?

2. What would it take to replace the failing AW70 tranny in my 85 245DL with an available AW70L or an AW72L? Are these drop-in replaceable? What would need to be retained/modified to fit one of these in?
