I had a similar problem with my '90 745. It was not easy to start, but when it runs it runs ok. I had to fix it with Volvo dealers, and their report was that they replaced fuel pump relay, engine relay and engine speed sensor (all 3 were original '90 components). No start problems after that. I think the mentioned above fail rarely but if you are still targeting the problem, you might find it useful to check..
