Two things come to mine. A faulty high pressure or faulty high temp sensor causing the compressor to shut down until compressor temps or high side pressure comes down. The hightemp sensor was a know problem formany years. Our 95 had it but our 98 does not. I do not know if your 96 has one.
Do you have three pressure sensors on the front passengers side of the condenser?
Do you have a high temp sensor on the compressor? (brass sensor on compressor with a wire coming out of it).
