A bad RPM sensor (AKA Crank position sensor) "should" record a fault code in the OBD system. Check the 700/900 FAQ on this site for instructions on reading the fault codes.
Another thing to look for - when the engine dies does it restart immediately? If not, can you hear the fuel pump run for a second or two when you first turn the key to the run position (before you actually crank the starter)? If you can't hear the pump "priming", the fuel pump relay may be at fault.
