91 740 erratic/inoperative Speedometer

On our 91 740 the speedometer became erratic and then one day stopped working. When the speedometer stopped so did the odometer. Reading the maintenance section I checked/cleaned the sensor connections and connected a voltmeter to the plug on the back of the speedometer and there was a smooth increase in AC voltage as the car accelerated. Is there anything else this could be but the speedometer as I don't want to send it off for repair for no reason? I was planning on using speedometer.com unless anyone has any better suggestions.
