Down in there, at the back end of the shift lever, down below the brush type thing that it slides through, there is a yellow piece of plastic.
This piece of plastic is bumped by the interlock solenoid (I still don't know why they refer to it as a microswitch). The solenoid pushes it out of the way and the shifter can move out of park normally.
If you pull the cover of the shifter up you can easily see it. If the yellow plastic piece is removed or broken off, the shifter will no longer have the silly interlock and it can be just like all the 1990 and earlier cars- which worked just fine with no transmission interlock.
It will also stop functioning if your brake light switch fails.
