It sounds like the kickdown cable is not retracting fully... sticky. I've read mentions of some problems involving this that recommended lubing the cable, but there were tons of warnings about what to use. Search and also check the FAQ.
My kickdown cable seems touchy too, but it works fine, I need to adjust it I think.
