I am fiddling with the timing on my 1800ES after a recent rebuild. The book calls for removing the intake hose from the air cleaner and covering the intake area with a special plug, then using that to lower the idle. With this contraption in place you set the timing at 10 degrees BTDC.
I don't have that device. Years ago I made a substitute out of some scrap I had around, but that is long gone. Any reason why I can't just leave everything hooked up and set the idle and timing? Where would you suggest setting the timing on a basically stock engine if I do leave everything hooked up?
