850 wheels on a 140

Does anybody know if it is at all possible to put Volvo "polaris" wheels on an early 142. I read somewhere that the early 140's require wheels with a 43mm offset. Right now I have Virgo wheels, but they don't seem quite cool enough. Please let me know if putting 16 or 17" Volvo, or any other brand of wheels for that matter, on a 68 142 is plausible without flaring the fenders etc.
