Idler arm changes: early to late 444-544

Hi all,

I'm looking into renewing the idler arm bushings in my 1957 444L as they're a wee bit on the sloppy side. I know that the good folks in Swenska changed idler arm designs right in the '57-'58 era.

I was recently lucky enough to win an Ebay auction for an NOS PV444 idler arm. Unfortunately it appears that I have the later, longer "straight-arm" design on my car. So I'll have to find bushings and/or repair kit for this piece. My questions are these: What years/chassis number did Volvo make the switch in design? If it ends up that my car was at some time retrofitted (with the newer arm setup), does this mean that the rest of my front axle/steering mechanism will be of the later vintage?

Happy tinkering!
