It's possible the PO hit a curb and damaged it, and probably didn't notice because he was too busy looking at a bent wheel. Rumor has it that the differential is a Dana type and you could look for a replacement, if so, find one that has a limited slip.
Putting in a new pin and shaft may not solve the problem if the cage was damaged.
