Howdy
I'm desperate for help here!
I have taken to driving my brothers spare 1989 745 after the untimely demise of my 97 960...
According to him, ocassionally the 745 would not start, seemingly randomly. If you were to leave it for a day it would fire right back up without a problem, like nothing happened. Other than that there isn't much background I know.
About 2 weeks ago I washed it and it wouldn't start back up until the next day. My thinking is that it was due to water getting somewhere it shouldn't.
Last Thursday I drove the car and it was perfectly normal. Up until a full night of rain. And then another day. And a another, still with more rain being forcast (making up for the lack of rain over summer I suppose).
So the car is sitting at a friends place, pretty much immoble. For the first day after the rain it would crank but not start, I tried nearly every hour to no avail, and agian the next day. Finally on Sunday I got out there and gave it another shot, after a loooooooooong period of turning over, it finally caught and ran. I let it idle for a while just to warm up and to entertain the theory that the engine heat would help evaporate any moisture that could have caused this. So I then decide to try and drive it home, but as soon as I put my foot on the gas it stalls. Turns out it will barely run now. I can't trust it to drive due to the stalling, so it's still parked at my friends place.
I got codes for faulty AMM, and cold start injector. I can't fathom why these would both fail after some rain, without any prior indication of failure or lack of performance from them. Yet the faulty AMM code rings true because the behavior is similar to what happened when my old 88 240 had the AMM go out. AMM connection is good, and I hardly see any water on things in the engine compartment. My 240 had a similar starting problem which I beleive was due to the fuel injector relay, possibly fuel pump relay (that AMM issue was seperate). But I can't do much testing because the car isn't at home, I'm at the mercy of other people for transport now.
I'm at my wits end and can't think of what else to do, aside from having it towed home and storing it in the garage to dry out. I'm looking at about 4 more days of rain!
Thanks for any help and insight into this problem!
