Quick review, I have a 1967 122s Wagon (P220), recently converted to dual HIF6 carbs, single 140-series airfilter (lockwashered, etc).
I just removed ad resealed the fuel tank, stopping an oozing leak at the seam and fixing a bad clamp leak at the filler neck. Reassembled yesterday evening. No leaks, I'm very happy and go to fill the car up.
I put 1 gal in the tank after reinstallation. I drove up to the station and put in 11 (?!) gallons. No leaks no stentch, etc.
Today, I'm out puting the final adjustments on the air filter box (new holes etc) when I'm pretty sure that I smell gas. I figure it's from the carbs. There's also a "dead" smell on the air and I assume that both are wafting in from a neighbor's garage-shop or the nearby dumpster.
Well, I head around to fire up the car and get that sinking feeling when I see a pool of fluid under the right rear tail of the car. Damn. Well.. it was not as I first thought. I noticed that fuel was escaping around my locking gas cap (?!?), so I open up the cap to see what's going on, and was shocked when at least a full cup of gasoline came pouring out of the filler hole. wha....?
I let it drain a bit and it stopped almost immediately. SO I re-capped it and nothing weird happened there for the rest of the day.
I really don't understand why the car waited 14 hours to decide that it had a little too much gas in the tank. I really didn;t play with the carbs, start the car, or anything fuel-related, but I'm the only obvious variable.
It was somewhat cooler last night than today so maybe I just experienced heat expansion. Still it wasn't exactly hot here.
Any ideas as to what might have caused this??
