Horrible scream under hood. 200 1993

When I first get in the car in the afternoon after work, I crank the motor and turn on the air. When I pull out on the street there is a horrible screaming coming from my hood. I have noticed that it stops IMMEDIATELY if I turn off the A/C switch. If I leave the a/c switch on and remove my foot from the gas the scream slows and stops. This occurs for about 20 seconds and then the scream stops after the engine warms up not to be heard from again (I have a 40 minute drive home), but it stops every time immediately if I turn off the A/C switch. What is going on???
