Valve lash won't help. Set that where is should be and forget about it.

I'm guessing timing, or the points aren't properly adjusted. If it didn't backfire before you did the tune up, that's where I'd be looking.

Could also just be running too lean. Running lean doesn't necessarily give you better mileage... it cuts power so you have to step harder on the gas pedal, causing you to burn more gas...
