Auto Transmission bushing and spring? 200 1989

"I really manhandled the seal while it was still under the car."

Maybe the spring you found popped out of the old seal while you were "manhandling" it?
Or maybe you really mangled it and found a broken off piece. Does it look "manhandled"?

I can't think of any other spring that size in that area. If you still have the old seal, see if its spring is missing.
