83/86 and 87/89 PRV-6 B28 and B280 camshafts 700 1990

I've been offered a set of cams for an 83/86 prv v6. Question, are they suitable for an 87/89 v6?

No, the B28 camshafts (83-86) will not work in the B280 (87-90) for the following reasons:

1. Distributor drive on B28 is back at the rear of the right camshaft using a gear ring on the camshaft. The B280 drives it's distributor using the front of the left camshaft (no gear used, it's mounted to the end of the shaft).

2. The Crankshaft on the B280 is redesigned to allow a 120 degree even-firing interval (inside a 90 degree block) using offset paired lobes on the crankshaft (one cylinder bank is advanced 15 degrees and the paired cylinders in the opposite bank are turned back 15 degrees). The B280 camshaft lobes are adjusted to compensate for the 15 degrees advance/delay from the 90 degree mark (to total up to the 120 degree separation). -not to mention an additional 4 degrees advance that they threw in for fun...

The 83-86 camshafts will not work in your B280, but they might look nice mounted on a wooden stand on your desk or mounted to the wall of your office or garage. It could serve as a conversation starter for the random person who walks into your office: "Hey, what are those?" "Oh, that's a pair of camshafts from a 2nd Generation PRV-6 engine (B28), the same engine that's used in the DeLorean. I've got the 3rd Generation version in my Volvo sitting out front."

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.
