You'd have to cut about 1/2" off the rear of the alternator's mounting ear, and drill the hole considerably larger. There's not all that much material to spare there.

That might be okay with a stock exhaust manifold, but using the SwEm bracket moves the alternator outboard about 1-1/2" and down 1/2", making it much easier to get it away from an aftermarket header. Even with the bracket, it's closer than I'd like to the old IPD header on our Amazon. With a modern 4-2-1, you'd have a real problem if you used the cast mounting boss on the block.
