87 240 DL was barely running, now won't **START***

I'm sorry, what I meant was the engine turns over but won't start. There's a lot of gas fumes. It'll turn and turn and then almost catch but goes back to chugging. I don't want to burn out my starter, and it's pretty obvious that no amount of hoping is gonna start this thing now. The last time it started it ran like hell and sounded like it was running on two cylinders or something. It was rocking and shaking like it was going to bust off the mounts. What next?
