Since I'm danish - I stumple more of the word "square" when refering to the part..
Maybe your car is fitted with something from another/later Volvo or other.

The original shift boot is round and as Phil writes, goes under the floor-mat (?)

The heater-tunnel for rear-seat didn't come before yearmodel 1965. But if your car has it someway - the original boot goes under this too..

In your yearmodel, floor-mat and boot are originaly light-grey rubber.
