Generator back ON! 1800 1966

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!
It's back on after driving around the block, fighting up a steep hill that almost stalled her (why she has no guts is next on the list - the carbs are my first guess, but that's Advanced Volvo Antics).
I'm totally at a loss... I checked all the connections on the regulator that were the cause last time (see 'Generator light on' last month).
Why would it work for a time and then quit? Any thoughts??
