Emergency Brake Cable Replacement 900 1996

Can anyone offer me advice on replacing the emergency brake cable on my 1996 960? I have successfully replaced the emergency brake shoes and short cable at the rear wheels, but I can't figure out how to pull through the new main cable from the center console emergency brake lever to the rear end where the short cable connects. (I am replacing both the cable and its housing as a unit.) Do the gas tank and drive shaft have to be dropped? (Please say no.) I have removed the center console and rear carpet and tried attaching the new cable to the end of the old one and pulling on the old one from under the rear of the car, but it hangs up somewhere above the gas tank. No amount of pulling and cursing seems to move it. Any tips would be appreciated.
