Overdrive Repair on AW-70 200 1989

My overdrive isn't working. The wire going to the overdrive got fried because it's next to the exhaust pipe. The portion of the wire that goes to the shift knob does not stick out such that I can splice it easily from underneath the car. How do I get the wire to come off of the shifter knob and into the underside of the car?
