1987 240DL wagon PLEASE HELP! 200 1987

My 87 240DL shut down at a traffic light. Turns over but won't start. There is power to the ignition coil, but I only get one spark to the distributer each time the ignition is turned. I thought I was supposed to get pulses instead of just one spark. I have read about similar problems posted here but they all said that they have spark to the distributer. I do not know if I can say that because I was under the impression that the spark was supposed to be continous but I only get one spark. I replaced the ignition coil but still the same problem. Could it be the timing? I just hope that it is not the ECU. Please help. My only car and I hate walking, except if it's on a trail.
