You can use any 14, 15 or 16" alloy on your 140.
The VW wheels are not an option; despite being the right size, they are not the right bolt pattern (4 vs. 5 lugs)- assuming you mean older VW wheels. TO my knowledge the newer, high performance GTI's and so on with 5-bolt wheels are not the same bolt pattern. About the only common car with a matching pattern are the Ford Taurus/Merc Sables. And the offset of those is certainly incorrect, but perhaps not as much of a problem on these older cars- I know I've successfully bolted a 17" 850T5-R wheel to a 140 before (a 70 142S, FWIW).
Anyway didn't have a set of those- looked cool though.
The 740 alloys are a fine fit, and the 240T Virgo wheel is a real nice look on these cars. Also complements the 1800 and the 164 quite nicely.
It is getting harder to find correct tire fitments for the original 15X4.5 or 15X5 wheels, since 165R15 is not a common size any longer. The 185/65-15 is however a great replacement and is made by many companies.
You have a lot of options- have fun!
