Transmission for 1961 Volvo 122 with B16B engine 120-130

I have engine and transmission out and I started to replace it with M40 transmission from 1965 P 122 But the new transmission is a little larger than my old one. Can they both be M40 or could my 1961 be a M4? Wkould a 1800 M40 be different from my 1600 M40?

Thanks
