rear end plugs... 700 1991

I was out taking a peek at my rear end... on my car... 740 GLE, solid rear axle.

and it has a rubber plug sitting on the bottom of my rear differential on the differential cover. This is along with the fill plug and the speedometer sensor mount.

I guess this seems a little strange... anyone else have one of these?
