Overdrive/Battery Not Charging 700 1992

Hey guys-- I've got a pretty odd problem, that's been happening on and off for about 22 months now, but in the past 6 it's gotten progressively worse. About 70% of the time when I'm driving my 92 740 Wagon, it refuses to switch into overdrive-- the dash light will occasionally reflect this, but not often (but then again, my dash lights very seldom work correctly)... It's been to the shop a number of times, where our "European" mechanics (note: the only european cars in Durango, CO, are Saabs, which our mechanics are very good at...) have replaced our alternator 3 times, and our battery twice, costing us... well... a lot.

Has anyone had a similiar problem? Please help! Road trips are my wagon's love, but with this problem, I'm afraid to take her over 60 miles from home (Had a little breakdown in the Mojave desert last summer due to this problem... Thank God for Cell Phones and AAA)
