How to fix the rough shift from 1st to 2nd gear? 700 1988

Looking on the 700/900 FAQ, I see that it is a rough 1st to 2nd gear shift is symptomatic of a worn "plastic ball" that controls the shift, that it gets too small and "surges" causing the sudden shift. I have this problem, too; a REALLY rough shift form 1st to 2nd. The FAQ also says that this can be remedied by a transmission shop for "around $100." But that's all it says! Has anyone treated this problem specifically, within this price range? I've been advised to be wary of transmission shops arguing for the panacea "rebuild" for this specifically rough shift... cause hey, the rest of the shifts are STILL oh, so smooth...
