front end shudder 200

I know, check the FAQ and stuff. I've looked but couldn't find anything similar to the problem i'm experiencing.

Symptoms:
1) When braking the car's front end shudders sideways, no up and down, and i can hear the banging coming from the driver's side.
2) When almost at a complete stop the shuddering stops but now the car lurches back and forth, almost like a bad ABS system, like the brakes are engaging and disengaging.

Troubleshooting:
Got under the car and discovered that my driver side tie rod (steering rod) is loose under the rubber boot. Would this cause the sideways shuddering I experience, or is there something else i'm missing? Ball joints and such seem okay. No looseness experienced when going over bumps.

Checked the rotors and calipers and everything initially looks okay, all tight and straight on visual inspection. I don't believe this 87 240DL came with abs. Brake pads are practically brand new. I'm stumped.

Of course I intend to change both tie rod ends, just wondering if any of you think i should pick up anything else while i'm at the pick n pull, bit of a drive for me.

Thank you in advance for all your input.

87-240DL
