Is the air conditioner supposed to cut out? 700 1991

We recently aquired a 91 740. I've noticed that the air conditioning runs very strong. However whenever the engine is under heavy load, such as strong acceleration or going up a hill the A/c cuts off. The fan still blows, just not very cold. Is this some sort of strange Volvo way of diverting power to the engine or something?
