Sharp jolt in and out of reverse 200 1988

I have a recently rebuilt automatic tranny in my 88 240DL (of course just barely out of warranty). When I go in and out of reverse, sometimes BLAM! there is a big clunk in the rear end that even shakes the car a little, and then sometimes it shifts smoothly. I have been told by the transmission place that did the rebuild that this symptom is not a tranny problem but rather simply the idle being too high. Not having the proper equipment to set the idle in the correct way, I did turn the idle screw a little bit until there was no more adjustment. It did seem to help the shifting problem, but it didn't fix it completely. Sometimes there is still a bit of a jolt although it's definitely gotten better and doesn't do it as often.

Questions:

1. What do you make of the idle still being too high and yet not being able to adjust it down any further?

2. Could this still be a tranny or rear end problem of some sort? The improvement after adjustment the idle as much as I could strongly implicates the idle speed, but I could swear this clunky sound is coming from the rear end..... many thanks
