Exhaust pipe heat shield removal - what tools? 200 1985

The heat shields on the exhaust pipe of my '85 240DL rattle (the one at the bend where the pipe comes down from the manifold to the underside, and the one immediately aft), especially when I start the car or when accelerating. I've tried the method of tightening hose clamps around them, but it needs frequent retightening, and is not completely effective.
I know some guys just remove the shields. What tools are needed, and are there any things to watch out for?
Thanks in advance.
