MAny cars use this type of hanging system. My old datsun did, both of my ford's did and I'm not sure if my dodge did, I never looked. SOme of these also used other types of mounts as well. I think that like most rubber parts, when they get old they break and the heat of the exhaust speeds up that process a bit. The solution is to replace the rubber pieces. This is the same thing kills rubber bushings on all older cars. I've dealt with these issues on my Volvo and am currently dealing with them on a 1990 Toyota. Any 12ish year old car with a 150,000+ miles on it is going to have the same issues.
