Battery not charging, oil light on 200 1987

Probably the famous (or infamous) crumbling engine harness. They tend to crumble early and crumble often down near the alternator where the oil sender is.

The insulation has most likely crumbled off the wires and the conductors are touching (shorted) each other or touching the engine block. If not right near the oil filter and alternator, then possibly where they (together) loop under the front pulley in the harness.

Also examine the engine harness where it plugs into the main harness near the firewall. You'll see a gray plastic plug, about 1"x2". Look at the wires going toward the engine and see if the insulation is falling off. It was (is) on my '86 245, and I patched it using "liquid tape" from Radio Shack. About 4 coats, I think. That was in '96 and it still runs fine (even though I have a good replacement harness ready to go in some decade).
