Re: alternator belt replacements (double pulley 2 belt version) 1989 760 GLE V6 700

A paired set of drive belts, as are found on Volvo 240's and in other applications, should always be replaced in sets. When manufactured they are cut consecutively from the belt stock. They have the same composition, stretch and other characteristics.

In my 240 experience, no belts have done as good as either Volvo dealer belts or OEM belts, installed in matched sets. Gates and Goodyear aren't OEM quality, IMHO.

The design calling for two belts is not without reason. The 4 cylinder 740's have one belt, but the belt wraps a larger portion of the alternator pulley. A second belt, and a matched set at that, on 1,000s of cars is a significant cost that Volvo would cut if they could.

That my two bit's worth. Hope it helps.

Bob
