No, you're not crazy... Just eccentric. I've never driven an S420, but I have driven S320s, S500s, and at least one S600 (as well as a few 300Ds). I imagine it sits somewhere between the 320 and the 500. I think you're crazy for thinking the '98 S-class is more plasticy than the 300D. It's just the opposite IMO, but if you liked the 300D more, I can see why you also prefer your 240 Volvo. If it's just a matter of preference, you can do what you like. I won't think any less of you. There are some things that the Volvo does better (gas mileage). As a side note, the MBs that I've come across tend to be just about as reliable as Volvos. I've never heard of the hydraulic door/trunk assist breaking (though it is a relatively new feature), and it's quite rare for any of the electric options to fail (especially on a 5 year old Benz), so I wouldn't worry too much about the cost of upkeep on your MBZ.
