Here's an old estimate I had. Notice the first line: The question was, what would the body shop charge for this job. I said a thousand, and it turns out that two years ago, a door replacement for the rear door was $769 not including paint materials cost. The materials would be another $70. Figure $840. So in today's prices, maybe around $900 for the door replacement. I was off by around 10%... not too bad for not having any estimate books.
Body work is expensive. I was just illustrating that it isn't usually a deal-killer for the insurance company. They'll probably cough up $8-900 for a door and paint. especially if the car is nice.
Check out the first line on the estimate which is the rear door. Front is a little bit more expensive.
This estimate effectively totaled my 240GL. It didn't translate well from a tab delimited file to a flat file, but you get the idea.
