Cruise Control Q 200 1986

Happy New Year to All -

Cruise control was visible on the 1986 244GL when it was New2Me in 1999, but it never worked. Recently I lost all 3 brake lights, and also the BFWS yellow light on the dash that always came on when hitting the brake pedal.

So, what could be the problem? Either the brake light switch and/or the BFWS relay, right? Clumb under the DS dash (man am I getting less flexible) and first put in another BFWS relay from my 1987 parts car.

Then pulled the connector from the brake light switch and put in a jumper wire. Tried it out - no change at all. Ratz. Clumb back under and looked around.

Found (1) the connector I was jumping was not from the brake light switch, I don't know where I got it, it was actually a loop. There was another connector near the switch. (2) the switch itself was way different from the pictures. In addition to the terminals for the connector there was a vacuum hose hooked to it. (3) the wires from the brake light switch went into a gizmo I couldn't see up behind above the bracket holding the pedals. (4) these was another black box (with a Volvo part number) lying there held in place by the black felt knee pad. It had a big long connector near, but not plugged into it. (5) There is a large vacuum motor connected to the gas pedal linkage somehow.

So I plugged in the big connector, made sure other wires were tight, and tested it. Brakes lights OK, still get the BFWS yellow light.

And The Cruise Control WORKS! But - and here's my question: It is really sensitive to changes. Seems even on level smooth pavement the engine is On-Off-On-Off-On-Off etc ad nauseam.

Do you know of any adjustment in the cruise control system that will adjust this sensitivity?

Thanks in Advance,

Bob
