Starter Solenoid Connections 200 1981

Re: 1981 242 2-cyl non-turbo, M46. I just put the starter back in and noticed a spade terminal on the solenoid that I'm pretty sure had nothing connected to it when I removed the starter. The solenoid has two spade terminals, one on the driver's side and one on the passenger side. The driver's side terminal had a wire connected to it, but my notes show that the other had nothing connected to it. Now I see that there is an extra wire with a female teminal that is not being used. I don't think it was connected before, but it would fit nicely over the passenger side spade terminal on the solenoid. What's this wire do? What's going on? Should it be connected?
