1996 960 Sedan Starting problem

If it's dirty contacts on the PNP, then rowing it a bunch of times might help by making better contact. If it's a PNP that is out of alignment or failing, then if the rowing does not help.... put the shifter in Neutral and turn the ignition key to the starter position with your LEFT hand and leave it there, now SLOWLY move the shifter forward out of neutral until the starter actually engages, if that does not happen then move it backward slowly until the starter engages. If you can't get it to work in Neutral, then try the same procedure in PARK. This works on my 95 960, it happens a lot when cold, especially if I shut the car off with a few minutes and then try to restart it. I don't know why it acts up more when cold, but it does. The PNP switch needs to be replaced.
