Steering wheel pulls to right after tie rod end replacement, even though I screwed the new ones on the same amount of turns. 200 1987

I replaced the tie rid ends today and the car pulls to the right now. I used the old trick of counting the amount of turns it takes to remove the old ones from the end of the rack, and installing the new ones with the same exact amount of turns, so you would think that the sreering wheel should be in exactly the same place, right? Wrong, now the car is pulling to the right and you have to cock the wheel to compensate, which I am sure is great for tire wear. I just don't understand how it can be off if you use the same amout of turns. Anyway, what are my options? I seem to remember an old trick of measuring from point to point on the back of the tires, and then measuring from point to point on the front and somehow making an adjustment. But, I know the reality , that I should just take it for an alignment. But you can't trust the "alignment man" at most of the discount tire places to do it right, and we have all heard the horror stories about people taking their car for an alignment only to have it worse off than before billybob got ahold of it.
