Steering shaft worries 444-544

Has any one changed the steering column and housing in a PV to something that is colapsable? I understand the 144 was the first Volvo to come out with a colapsable coulumn. I going to be puting my 544 on the road and will most likely be driving it for years. I would like something better than a solid
shaft from the front of the car to my chest. Is the 144 steering shaft a possible modification to the 544. Fabricating some parts would be OK.
