Hi all,
The beast has survived surgery and my faith has been restored in the Volvo name. To understand the whole story from 960 buying advice to unforeseen peril, and notes from the operating room, do a search under Zach.
The 960 has gotten a bad rap on this page and I truly feel for the misfortunes of Tom and Jerry, but I must share that this was a real success story. For about $500 in parts (intake valves, valve guides, belts and gaskets) and a few days labor (thanks Dad) she purrs like a kitten again. I sure am glad I didn't "cut my loses" and scrape a $10,000 car. This is a complex engine and thus deserves respect, but that does not make it a bad engine. I know some, like Greg Mustang, are a little spooked by the Interference engines, but this is as close to a BMW as you can get in a Volvo and I don't regret buying it a bit.
Token ring man suggested I post some pics from surgery so I have at

You can see dings on the pistons, bend valves, and a broken valve guide. The cams were fortunately just fine. Hopefully I can start enjoying this one now as I have with my previous 8 Volvos. Thank you all for your advice and tips.
