generator perplxities 120-130

My amp light has been shining brightly for a week. I tested the connections on FUSE 1 & all look to be good, so I installed a new generator & regulator this afternoon. But the light kept shining.

The voltage reading at the generator output (D+) is negative (-2.5 volts), as is the voltage at (DF) (-.5 volts). What could be going on ???

All the connections have been verified correct.

I "polarized" the field as instructed by momentarily touching the DF+ on the generator with a patch wire from the battery positive terminal. How long should I have to do that ... I did it for 2-3 seconds, with a good deal of sparking. Is it possible I should do it for longer ??

The negative readings would seem to indicate a reversed polarity on the field.

What could cause that / how can it be remedied ?

Is there something else I should check ?

OR should I suspect the new/rebuilt Bosch generator ?

thanks
