740 ignition circuit 1987

Just bought an 87 740 GLE sedan. Was buying it for parts until I saw it & it's in way too good shape to take apart. The car runs & drives great, but I'm starting it with the help of a Mac Tools remote start button.

The ignition switch will not engage the starter. I've swapped the switch for a known-good one & checked the park / neutral saftey switch (zf trans, but will get an AW if this one ever acts up).

Any ideas where to look?

The gauges have an intermittent function problem as well. I'm going to clean all the grounds & pull the cluster to check & clean all connections 2maro.
The fuel & speedo are intermittent operation together (on the few occasions they work, they work @ the same time), the tach works much more often & the temp guage always works. The batt light is on most of the time though the system is charging even when it's lit.

Any thing I should look for other than connections & grounds?

Does anyone make heavy duty lift supports for the deck lid? This thing has a spoiler which will remain for now as I don't want the holes in my trunk.
