neophyte electric fan testing and rewiring 700

brickers:

I picked up a used (but apparently working) aux electric fan today, and am wondering how I test it. People mention "crossing the circuit"... by this do they mean just exposing the two wires leading to the fan and shorting them? I can't get at the connectors unless I pull the plastic clip... do I do this and reverse them? Just kinda confused on what I'm supposed to do to test it.

Also, I'm wondering how, exactly, you go about wiring in a new radiator thermostat to trigger the electric fan directly when the system heats up. Do I cut one of the wires from the fan (grey/red?) and lead it to the stat?

Any explicit help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
