Smoking water pump!!!! 700

This weekend I replaced the antiquated mechanical fan with a Hayden electric fan. This old car has 175,000 miles so a little extra help from an electrical fan is very appreciated. Besides being unable to figure out the wiring (Hayden isn’t open until Monday), when I started the car the water pump let out a belch of smoke and a horrendous squeal. I noticed some metal shavings around the water pump and thought I may have used bolts that were too long. The bolts were ok upon removal and inspection but the water pump still smokes a tiny bit still but no squeal. What the heck did I do to my wifes car or was something wrong to begin with and is now obvious?
