Early 760 dashes 700 1983

How come early examples of the 760 GLE (i.e., 1983 & 1984) I have seen have the 240's instrument panel in them? For instance, an '83 I checked out recently had the tach on the left, fuel and temp gauges on the right, and a 55-mph speedometer in the center. I know that in almost all the 700- and 900-Series cars, the tach is on the right and the gauges are separate. So why did the factory use 240 instrument panels on the 760s for the first two years?
